MEG MCLAUGHLIN, LMHC

As a therapist, I work in partnership with people to identify ways problems have affected their lives—and strategize ways to help them regain control over their lives. I work collaboratively examining challenges/problems particularly looking to uncover life experiences that contradict these problems—contradictions that may provide ways for people to take back control of their lives.

ABOUT ME

MEG MCLAUGHLIN, M.A., L.M.H.C.

I am an independent therapist working primarily within two models of counseling: Emotionally Focused Therapy and Narrative Therapy. I am passionate about helping every person with whom I work to create satisfying and meaningful lives.

I have been working as a therapist since 1999 beginning my professional work as an extern with Group Health Cooperative and then opening my independent practice in 2000.  In the last few years I have been specializing in working with couples and families using Emotionally Focused Therapy in conjunction with my significant background in Narrative Therapy.

MY APPROACH

While I bring my areas of expertise in my work as a therapist, I also bring my deep conviction that the people with whom I work are the experts in their own lives.  I endeavor to work in partnership with people to identify ways problems have affected their lives—and strategize ways to help them regain control over their lives. I work collaboratively examining negative interaction patterns and in particular looking to uncover life experiences that contradict these problems—contradictions that may provide ways for people to take back control of their lives. You can expect me to be authentic and respectful, sometimes crying along with you, sometimes laughing.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION

I am a licensed mental health counselor in the state of Washington. I hold a Master of Arts degree in Mental Health Counseling from Seattle University.  I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Washington, Bothell. I work with adult individuals, families and couples. I have advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy and Narrative Therapy.

SERVICES I OFFER

COUPLES THERAPY

We are wired to be interdependent on significant others. When we feel unsafe with our partner, our brains can go into overdrive to remedy it by pushing to re-establish connection or by retreating to protect the connection.  Usually with couples, one is pushing, or “protesting”, for connection while the other is retreating, or “withdrawing”. When this happens, both are in pain and feel helplessly caught in a negative pattern.

If you find yourselves caught in a negative pattern with each other, I can help you get back to or find a way to a healthy, trusting, supportive pattern.  In working with me, you can expect to feel safe and respected and that both partners will feel seen and heard. We will identify the negative cycle that is holding your relationship hostage, your needs and desires for your relationship, and co-construct preferred, healthy ways of getting the love and support you need.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

At times life presents individuals with challenges leaving them feeling unmoored, unbalanced, and hopeless.

In working with me, you can expect to feel safe and respected and seen and heard.  We will explore what you are up against and co-create solutions that lead you to the life you want. Some “problems” that people have consulted me on include:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Bipolar Disorder

  • Relationship Challenges

  • Personal Growth

  • Work/Career Issues
